George Bell, The Church’s Function in War-Time (November 1939): „The Church stands for the Cross, the gospel of redemption. It cannot, therefore, speak of any earthly war as a ‘crusade,’ for the one thing for which it is impossible to fight with earthly weapons is the Cross. Its supreme concern is not the victory of the national cause. It is a hard thing to say, but it is vital. Its supreme concern is the doing of the Will of God, whoever wins, and the declaring of the Mercy of God to all men and nations. The ministers, especially the leaders of the Church, have a great responsibility for making this plain. It is not only that the Church, if its clergy preach the gospel, offers a counter-balancing force of undoubted authority to the waves of national emotion, and so helps to preserve spiritual integrity. That is important. But what is still more important is the fact that the Church is the trustee of the gospel of redemption; and unless the gospel is preached, the Church is not the Church.“

Sie kann daher von keinem irdischen Krieg als einem ‚Kreuzzug‘ sprechen, denn das eine, wofür es unmöglich ist, mit irdischen Waffen zu kämpfen, ist das Kreuz. Ihr oberstes Anliegen ist nicht der Sieg der nationalen Sache. Es ist schwer zu sagen, aber es ist entscheidend: Ihr oberstes Anliegen ist das Tun des Willens Gottes – wer auch immer siegt – und die Verkündigung der Barmherzigkeit Gottes gegenüber allen Menschen und Nationen. Die Geistlichen, insbesondere die Führer der Kirche, tragen eine große Verantwortung dafür, dies klarzustellen.
